Antique restoration by specialists in Burwell
O We started Peter Norman Antiques as a partnership in 1978. Much has changed since then, but the foundations of our business have remained much the same, - restoration of our own pieces to sell, hand in hand with restoration and other services for our customers.
Art restoration has always been important and lately it has become a major part of our activities. We have, over the years restored a wide range of pieces, from Elizabethan portraits, to a view of Windsor Castle by Lambert, a Franz X. Winterhalter, (Queen Victoria's favourite painter), of King's College Chapel, a still life by Francis Bacon and a boating scene by Duncan Grant among many other lesser known artists.
Our greatest achievement to date is the discovery of a lost painting by John Crome. This was a large magnificent rural scene, filthy because it had spent years in a garage. The picture appeared unsigned until we cleaned the bottom right hand corner which contained a horse drawn cart. The artist had signed the picture on the cart's backboard as if he were the carter! (Crome's father was a carter.) Signature and painting were authenticated by Norwich Castle Museum.
As we exhibit less frequently as antiques dealers, we can spent more time for the slow, demanding and rewarding processes required to bring a customer's favourite piece of art back to life while still restoring many other antiques.
In the two galleries you will see pictures and other objects that we have restored for ourselves and our customers.
